The New York based trio Importango is celebrating its debut album release, “Tango for Import,”with a concert May 30 at St. Peter’s Church in New York. The album is also the first release by Panoramic Recordings, a new division of New Focus Recordings.
“Tango for Import” is dedicated to trio member pianist Octavio Brunetti, who passed away suddenly in August 2014.
Importango describes its mission to deliver “authentic tango” with a “fresh perspective,” which they do. With violinist Machiko Ozawa, guitarist Adam Tully, and Brunetti on piano, classics like “Comme Il Faut” (Eduardo Aurolas) and “Tierra Querida” (Julio De Caro) retain the traditional sounds of their original composers, yet are playfully lighter both in pitch and intensity.
The album contains a couple of originals composed by Tully, such as Vals Mio, a pleasantly melodic waltz reminiscent of traditional valses. The entire album was arranged by Brunetti, except Vals Mio.
Tully wrote of Brunetti in his album notes:
Octavio Brunetti was our guru. Thoroughly steeped in tango and Argentine folk music, with experience in tango performance far beyond his years, Octavio was also nothing short of a brilliant musician, the type that comes along once in a generation.
With eternal love and gratitude we dedicate this album to his memory.
